2009 MLB Draft: Stephen Strasburg Selected as No. 1 Pick by Washington Nationals

Stephen Strasburg was selected with the No. 1 pick in 2009 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Strasburg, the star San Diego State right-handed pitcher, has been touted as the best college pitching prospect in the history of the draft. His selection by the Nats was much expected.

Strasburg, who has a 100 mph fastball, was 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 109 innings for the Aztecs this season. His only loss came in the College World Series playoffs to Virginia.

The Nationals also have the No. 10 pick, compensation for not signing right-hander Aaron Crow, its first-round selection in 2008.

Strasburg is represented by agent Scott Boras, who has floated some mind-boggling numbers for the consensus top selection, starting with a $15 million signing bonus. Many think that Boras will ask for compensation similar to Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsusaka, who received around $50 million.
