U.S. Putting Tour Championship Begins Today

The first-annual U.S. Putting Tour Championship begins today with the first of six Round 1 days of competition at The Crossings in Carlsbad, California for top professional and amateur players from around the country.

Each day, up to 72 golfers will play 72 holes of putting on the USPT Championship's 8,000 square foot, 12-hole putting course. These golfers will attempt to become one of 72 golfers who make it to Round 2 on Sunday, October 2.

The top 24 golfers from Round 2 will move on to Round 3, the final round, on the afternoon of October 2. The final order of finish will be determined by the combined Round 2 and 3 scores. The overall winner will receive the crystal USPT Championship trophy and earn the title of America's Best Putter.

Golfers competing as professionals in the putting championship will vie for their share of the $15,800 purse, including the $10,000 prize for first. Amateurs will battle for $4,000 in Ashdon Golf merchandise, as well as additional merchandise prizes.

Jim Hartley, president of the U.S. Putting Tour, said it is still possible for golfers to enter the 2011 USPT Championship. "Golfers can play their first round as late as Saturday, October 1, so we're taking online and in-person entries until all available spots in the tournament are full."

Individuals can enter online at a special sign-up page for the putting tournament at the USPT website. Golfers can come to The Crossings any day the week of September 26 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to enter in person.

Golfers and golf fans who want to view the tournament are welcome to visit The Crossings throughout the week. The final round will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2 and should conclude around 4:00 p.m.

Sunday also will feature a $10,000 putting contest to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. One person will take a 50-foot putt worth $10,000 if made. The putt will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
