Libyan
leader Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Italy on Wednesday evening, marking his first
visit to the country that once held colonial rule over his African nation.
Gaddafi’s
three-day visit will include meetings with Italian Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi and President Giorgio Napolitano with discussions expected to focus
on the issue of illegal immigration. Of main concern is the current policy
adopted by Italy in which those immigrants attempting to reach Italian shores
are intercepted and forcibly repatriated. While Libya has favored this policy
Berlusconi has faced heavy criticism from left-wing groups inside his country.
In
addition to talks surrounding immigration Gaddafi and Italian leaders are also
expected to address their trade relationship, something that has evolved into a
mutually beneficial bond. That relationship could continue to grow as Gaddafi
was accompanied by a large contingent of Libyan businessmen who have expressed
an interest in boosting their investments in Italian industry.
Gaddafi
is also scheduled to speak with a large group of prominent Italian women
representing business, politics and culture.
