A
UN resolution to expand sanctions against North Korea is expected to go to a
vote on Friday following an agreement by key Security Council members on the wording
of the document.
The
Security Council has been under pressure to expand their sanctions against the communist
country following their recent nuclear and ballistic missile testing, a
violation of earlier agreements. Along with the five permanent members of the Security
Council- China, Russia, France, UK and the United States- Japan and South Korea
also agreed to the wording on the new resolution.
As
part of the UN resolution the ban on nuclear and ballistic missile testing
would be reasserted and all UN member states would be called on to inspect
North Korean ships that may be carrying equipment that could be used for
creating weapons of mass destruction.
The
resolution also calls on North Korea to rejoin the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty, something they withdrew from after Pyongyang declared the talks dead.
On Tuesday North Korea stepped up their rhetoric by stating they would use
nuclear weapons if provoked, leading the Security Council to hurry their
resolution.
A
vote from the 15-nation council is to be held on Friday with the expectation it
will pass without trouble.
