Hernando County has fallen victim to major problems with substance abuse issues in the state of Florida. According to statistics from the Hernando County Medical Examiner there was a 21% increase in drug related deaths in the county in 2008, with 47 people losing their lives as a result of drug addiction during a one year period.
Some of the most commonly abused drugs throughout Hernando include methamphetamine, MDMA (ecstasy) and most recently, pharmaceutical drugs. The Hernando County Sheriff’s office reports that there was a 300% increase in prescription drug fraud in 2008 and a 33% increase in pharmacy robberies throughout the county.
But drug and alcohol addiction isn’t just affecting adults in Hernando County but is starting very early with school-aged children. The Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey reports that 50% of Hernando County high school students used drugs or alcohol in the last 30 days. In addition, 32% of school-aged kids start drinking in the county before they reach the age of 13. And even more shocking, 16% of students were actually intoxicated in class in the last 30 days.
