The case of a 72-year-old woman being tasered in Texas
has sparked controversy over whether the officer was right in using the weapon.
The incident started when Kathryn Winkfein was stopped
for going 60 mph in a 45 mph zone. Deputy Chris Bieze issued Winkfein a ticket
and under Texas law the ticket must be signed by the driver. Winkfein refused
to sign the ticket and Deputy Bieze had her step out of her car to arrest her, the
consequence for not signing the ticket.
Winkefein then agreed to sign the ticket but Bieze
refused and threatened to use the taser if she did not “step back.” The verbal
disagreement escalated to Bieze shoving the woman. Winkefein then turned
to get back in her truck when Bieze used the taser.
Winkefein was arrested for resisting arrest. The Travis
County Sheriff’s stands by Bieze’s actions.
