The
2009 MLB Draft got underway on Tuesday with the Washington Nationals selecting
San Diego State’s junior fire-baller Stephen Strasburg with the number one
overall pick. Strasburg’s selection comes as no surprise as his reputation has
already reached meteoric heights but it remains to be seen if the Nationals
will be able to sign the right-hander.
With
Strasburg off the board the Seattle Mariners went with North Carolina’s Dustin
Ackley with the number two pick. The Tar Heels’ 6-1, 184 outfielder/first
baseman doesn’t exactly blow people away with his physical appearance but he is
a remarkable hitter who led NC to the 2007 and 2008 College Baseball World
Series.
Donovan
Tate was the first high school player taken in the 2009 MLB Draft after the San
Diego Padres took the centerfielder with the third pick. Tate has plenty of
options on the football field as well which could pose problems for the Padres.
Overall
it was a first round dominated by pitchers as 11 of the first 15 selections
were for hurlers, five of those picks were high school players.
