A unique shark captured Tuesday in an underground canyon
in Monterey Bay was returned to the only a few hours after being put on display
at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The rarely-seen prickly shark was put in the aquarium’s
display tank Wednesday but marine biologists determined the 189 pound shark wasn’t
doing well. The shark, which lives deep in the ocean, would often float
vertically or belly-up near the surface of the water.
After three hours in the tank, marine biologists decided
to return the prickly shark to the ocean. “We think it has to do with
buoyancy problems. It's designed to be at depth. We brought it to shallow
surfaces and it just didn't float real well and wasn't able to make that
adjustment in such a short time period,” explains Dr. Mike Murray.
“It's called a prickly shark because the skin has these
little denticles that are prickly. It's almost like little rose bushes all
along the surface and skin of shark,” he added.
