James von Brunn, Holocaust Museum Shooter, to be Charged with Murder

James von Brunn, the 88-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing a guard at Washington D.C.’s Holocaust Museum on Wednesday, will be charged with murder according to Mayor Adrian Fenty.

von Brunn, a self-proclaimed white supremacist and anti-Semite, walked through the doors of the Holocaust Museum shortly before 1:00 p.m. and opened fire with what has been described as  ahigh-powered rifle. A security guard, Stephen Tyrone Johns, was struck in the chest and later died from his wounds. Other security guards quickly returned fire, striking von Brunn in the face.

Johns, along with the other officers on duty, are being hailed as heroes following their response to von Brunn’s attack. The Holocaust Museum had been packed with visitors at the time of the shooting and many believe the death toll would have been significantly higher had von Brunn not been shot himself.

It is believed von Brunn acted alone in the attack but police are continuing their investigation and may still label it as a hate crime.
