Four
Chinese Muslim Uighurs held at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo have
been released and resettled in Bermuda despite demands from China for their
return.
The
men had been part of a group that were taken into custody by U.S. forces in
Afghanistan but were later determined to not be “enemy combatants.” Rather than
return the men to China the U.S. opted to settle the four in Bermuda after the government
agreed to take them.
That
decision was based largely on the belief that if they had been returned to
China they would have been tortured or executed. China has said the Uighur men
were members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a UN recognized terrorist
group.
China
has accused Uighur insurgents of launching a separatist movement. While China
has expressed anger over the U.S. decision London wasn’t pleased with Bermuda’s
decision to take the men in without consulting them first.
According
to Foreign Office in London “We have underlined to the Bermuda government that
it should have consulted the UK on whether this falls within their competence
or is a foreign affairs or security issue for which the Bermuda Government do
not have delegated responsibility.”
