Manchester United Accepts Real Madrid's $131M Offer for Cristiano Ronaldo

By Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

Manchester United accepted Real Madrid’s $131.6 million transfer offer for superstar Cristiano Ronaldo on Thursday.

The $131 million (£80m or €93.9m) offer is the largest in UEFA history and Real Madrid’s second-straight record breaking effort after paying AC Milan a $97 million (£56m or €69m) transfer fee for Brazilian star Kaka earlier this last week. Real Madrid have committed to spending an incredible $228m (£139m or €162.9m) on just two players.

Real president Florentino Perez is known for his outlandish expenditures for international superstars, as he oversaw the acquisitions of global stars Ronaldo (£23.2m), David Beckham (£24.5m), Luis Figo (£37m), as well as Zinedine Zidane (then world record £46.7m).

''At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player,” said a statement from the Manchester United organization. “Matters are expected to be concluded by June 30. The club will not comment until further notice.''

Ronaldo, 24, is currently on vacation in Los Angeles, but said that he was “flattered” when asked about the offer. "It's flattering when two of the top teams in the world want you to play for them,” said Ronaldo. “The deal is historic. €93m is quite a sum of money.”

Manchester United is rumored to be looking into Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery as a possible replacement from Cristiano, along with Wigan’s Antonio Valenica.

Ronaldo has helped to lead Man U to two consecutive UEFA Champions League finals (winning the 2008 title) and three straight Premier League championships.

In 2008, Ronaldo had a historical season. He won the FIFPro World Player of the Year, European Golden Shoe, UEFA Club Footballer of the Year, became the first Premier League player to ever win the FIFA World Player of the Year, and was Manchester United's first Ballon d'Or winner in 40 years.
