John Atkinson, who won a chance to compete against
celebrities in a US Open golf contest, died Thursday after a 2 year battle with
lung cancer. Atkinson, 40, died at his Omaha home surrounded by family.
Atkinson was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007 and became
an advocate for lung cancer awareness. In 2008, he was selected to compete in
the celebrity golf contest after his essay was chosen as the winner out of
56,000 entries.
Contestants, which included Justin Timberlake, Matt Lauer
and Tony Romo, were challenged to break 100 at Torrey Pines golf course in San
Diego. Although Atkinson didn’t break 100, his appearance on the televised golf
tournament helped boost awareness for lung cancer and raise money for research.
