Voting in Iran’s presidential election has been extended by at least four hours after officials determined the massive voter turnout would make it impossible to close polls at their scheduled time.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is seeking a second term in office but early reports have suggested he is facing a serious challenge from former Prime Minister Hossein Mousavi. Mousavi has received a large amount of support from the younger voters while Ahmadinejad remains popular among the more conservative, hardline Iranians. The two could meet in a run-off if no candidates reach 50 percent in the first round.
The other two contenders, Mohsen Razai and Mehdi Karroubi, could easily take votes away from the two leading candidates but they are not seen as serious contenders for the presidency.
Ahmadinejad has accused his opponents of conspiring with Israel in an attempt to discredit his first four years in office. Those allegations have been flatly denied and in return Ahmadinejad has been accused of rigging the election.
