One day after agreeing on the wording of a draft resolution detailing tougher sanctions against North Korea the United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to impose those sanctions on the communist country.
The Security Council felt the need to impose the tougher sanctions following North Korea’s decision to continue their nuclear and ballistic missile testing despite the UN’s warning against such actions. As part of Friday’s resolution the Security Council imposed a wider ban on arms sales, financial sanctions as well as the inspection of North Korean ships to prevent transportation of nuclear arms.
North Korea has felt continued pressure from the UN since they stepped away from the table of the six-nation talks concerning their nuclear program. North Korea argued that previous sanctions that should have been lifted were still in place and because of that they would no longer participate in the discussions.
Since that time they have test fired several ballistic missiles as well as conducted a nuclear test that drew an instant response from the United Nations.
While Security Council members China and Russia are often hesitant in imposing such tough restrictions and sanctions both countries felt the actions of North Korea jeopardized the security and peace in the region.
