Wrong House Demolished, Georgia Family Devastated

A demolition crew mistakenly demolished the wrong home, leaving the family devastated. Al Byrd says the modest, 3-bedroom home in Carrollton, Georgia was built by his father in 1950. 

No one was living in the home when it was destroyed, but Byrd says many members of the family had lived in the home at one time. The house was furnished and contained many family heirlooms. The Byrd family planned to use the house for an upcoming family reunion.

Austin-based reality company Forestar Group Inc. contracted Marietta-based Southern Environmental Services to demolish a vacant house about 150 yards from Byrd’s and on the opposite side of the road. Larry Watts, of Southern Environmental, said the crew used GPS coordinates to determine which home was scheduled for demolition.

It’s unclear how the wrong coordinates were obtained. Forestar Chief Financial Officer Chris Nines says his company gave Southern Environmental color photos and an address to identify the right house. “Certainly, we’re not happy about it and feel bad for Mr. Byrd,” Nines says.

“It’s was disbelief,” Byrd says of the first time he saw the remains of his home. “It’s was like a mirage.”

Byrd has hired a lawyer and wants answers on how the mistake was made. “We’re trying to connect the dots. This story is most unreal,” he adds.

Byrd currently lives in Atlanta, where he runs an eponymous consulting business.
