President Barack Obama met with Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai at the White House on Friday and following discussions the U.S. leader announced he would be providing $73 million in aid to the country in an effort to pump life back into their struggling economic and health sectors.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting Obama praised Tsvangirai for his “courage and tenacity” in his bringing about change in Zimbabwe. Tsvangirai entered a power-sharing agreement with President Robert Mugabe in February following a contentious presidential election that was filled with violence and intimidation.
Tsvangirai, leader of the former opposition Movement for Democratic Change, dropped out of the race just a week before the vote after declaring Mugabe had rigged the election and launched campaigns of violence against his supporters. Mugabe denied those claims but following is victory he was pressured into forging a deal with Tsvangirai after several countries placed sanctions and embargoes on the country.
Facing a crumbling economy, agriculture and health sector Mugabe bowed to the pressure and eventually agreed to the deal. Tsvangirai is being hailed as a conduit for change in Zimbabwe and his role in the government has opened foreign aid, something Mugabe was unable to do on his own.
