Two Narco Subs Discovered In Colombia

Two sophisticated narco subs were discovered Friday in Colombia, authorities announced Monday. Col. Carlos Enrique Rodriguez, the deputy director of the National Police narcotics squad, said “intelligence work” led authorities to the submarines.

The first was found along the coast of Valle del Cauca province. The vessel was equipped with a GPS navigation system and could carry up to 10 tons of cocaine.

The second submarine could only carry 4 tons of drugs, but was more sophisticated with radar, navigation, external cameras and a gyroscope. The vessel, named The Black Pearl, was design to travel for 10 days without refueling. The Black Pearl is estimated to be worth $2 million. Authorities say the submarine was found inside a wooden shack in a dense jungle area of Choco province.

Both subs were built by FARC rebels. No arrests were made in connection with the discoveries.
