Typhoon Nesat pounded the Philippines Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and 93 mph winds. The island nation was already soaked by monsoon rains when Nesat made landfall about 120 miles north of Manila around 5 a.m. The storm sparked strong waves, massive flooding, power outages and landslides.
According to reports, Nesat is responsible for the deaths of at least 16 people. The first victim was a 1-year-old boy who drowned in a swollen creek in Catanduanes province. At least seven of the dead were killed by falling trees in Manila while four others died when a wall of their home collapsed. A landslide in Olongapo was blamed for the death of one man.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said at least 104 people have been saved in rescue operations across the Philippines. Less than a dozen people remain missing.
Typhoon Nesat is expected to move towards southern China after it leaves the Philippines late Tuesday.
