Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been declared the outright winner of Iran’s presidential election on Friday, handing the controversial leader a second term in office with 62.6% of the vote.
Following the announcement from the interior ministry the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei congratulated Ahmadinejad on the victory and encouraged Iranians to respect the vote and abstain from any violence.
That call was ignored by supporters of the pro-reform candidate Hossein Mousavi who immediately accused the Ahmadinejad camp of rigging the election and launched street protests that resulted in clashes with police.
Mousavi had declared victory earlier in the day but official election counts credited him with just 33.75% of the vote. That figure has been debated by Mousavi who commented after the announcement, “I personally strongly protest the many obvious violations and I'm warning I will not surrender to this dangerous charade.” His supporters have called for a re-run yet that remains extremely doubtful.
