In response the United Nations announcement that they would increase sanctions against their country North Korea revealed it would be stepping up its efforts to enrich uranium as a means of developing nuclear weapons.
Pyongyang reacted strongly to the UN Security Council’s unanimous vote to toughen sanctions which includes a wider ban of arms, financial restrictions as well as the inspection of North Korean ships to ensure there were no weapons. Following the UN announcement North Korea said any attempt to board its ships would be an “act of war” and lead to a military response.
In a statement released by North Korea’s foreign ministry it was announced, “all plutonium to be extracted will be weaponized. One third of used fuel rods have so far been reprocessed,” the statement continued, “we will start uranium enrichment.”
North Korea drew the ire of the UN following its testing of ballistic and nuclear weapons despite earlier sanctions that forbid the country from such acts.
