Former Head of Guinea’s Armed Forces Arrested on Drug Trafficking Charges

General Diarra Camara, the former head of Guinea’s armed forces, has been arrested and will face charges of drug trafficking following an investigation that had been carried out by the country’s new military authorities.

Camara was among 20 people arrested in the investigation as the country tries to deal with the growing problem of becoming a major hub for the trafficking of narcotics. Along with Camara authorities arrested his son as well as several other ex-senior officers.

The military government, led by Moussa Dadis Camara, has made serious efforts to crack down on the trafficking. Moussa Dadis Camara took power in a bloodless coup following the death of President Lansana Conte last December. Following Conte’s death his son, Ousmane Conte, admitted to drug trafficking.
