Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to deliver a major speech on Sunday in which he will address his country’s policy concerning the ongoing Middle East peace process as well as the recent re-election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
While Netanyahu has felt international pressure to support a two-state solution he has remained non-committal when it comes to the establishment of an independent Palestine. Rather, the PM has tried to focus on building stronger economic, political and security relations with Palestinians.
Netanyahu has shown a willingness to resume peace talks yet he has remained vague concerning what concessions Israel would be ready to make. He may try to clear some of the confusion in his speech at Bar-Ilan university on Sunday with many believing he will announce plans to end Jewish settlements in the West Bank, a major condition of the Palestinian Authority.
