In a highly anticipated speech in which he was to detail his plans for a lasting Middle East peace agreement Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated he would back a Palestinian state but only if it was completely demilitarized.
Netanyahu has been facing international pressure to back a two-state peace agreement and his speech on Sunday appeared to make that concession yet it remains to be seen how Palestinians will react to the conditions he placed on such a move.
The PM stated a Palestinian state could not have an army, would have no control over its air space and must ensure there were no ways to smuggle in weapons.
In addition to outlining the conditions for a Palestinian state Netanyahu also demanded recognition of Israel as a Jewish nation. While Netanyahu tackled the issue of a Palestinian state he didn’t appear willing to make any concessions on the issue of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, another condition set by the Palestinian Authority.
Netanyahu said he would be willing to begin immediate talks with Palestinians and said he was prepared “for a true peace agreement.”
