While tens of thousands of supporters attended a rally in central Tehran celebrating the presidential election victory for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad his closest rival in the vote, Mir Hossein Mousavi, filed an official appeal against the results after claiming inaccuracies.
Ahmadinejad has denied allegations concerning vote-fixing and said the results were a clear indication that the people of Iran supported his leadership. With his second term now in place Ahmadinejad addressed the criticisms launched by Mousavi, telling those gathered at the rally, “Some people want democracy only for their own sake.” He went on to state, “Some want elections, freedom, a sound election. They recognize it only as long as the result favors them.”
Immediately following the announcement of Ahmadinejad’s victory large protests were staged by opposition supporters and those protests quickly turned violent as clashes with police enveloped parts of Tehran.
Mousavi has called for an end to the violence but urged his supporters to “continue your nationwide protests in a peaceful and legal way.” Despite those calls the violence rolled into Sunday as protesters continued to burn vehicles and throw stones at police
