Oxycodone Use and Abuse – Drug Rehab There to Help

Trois-Rivieres, Quebec – The Narconon Trois-Rivieres drug rehab program has seen its fare share of clients battling addiction to Oxycodone, and its many forms of pain relief, abuse, and addiction problems.  Oxycodone is frequently used as a pain reliever to treat moderate to severe short-term pain, and it is also used to treat the terminally ill.  It has been available for many years and has been used in a combination of pain relieving drugs such as, Percocet (generic names are Endocet and Oxycocet).  The amount of Oxycodone in the Percocet pills is typically 2.5mg to 5mg, and it is designed for short-term pain relief.  Another short acting tablet, which also contains Oxycodone in it, its brand names were Supeudol and Oxy IR.  It is a long acting form of Oxycodone, and has between 10-80 mg of Oxycodone in it; this is the very popular drug OxyContin.

OxyContin is a pain medication that is designed with a long release formula; however, when this drug is crushed and then snorted, or chewed, and/or injected the effects are almost immediate.  It is absorbed rapidly into the blood stream and produces a heroin like effect of euphoria.  It is typically known as hillbilly heroin.  When this drug is taken as directed by doctors and other medical professional, most patients will not develop a dependency to it.  Yet, when the drug is abused and misused, there will be a very high chance the person using it will become physically and psychologically dependent on it.  When this occurs, the user will have no choice but to continually up the dosage, as their body is becoming physically dependent on a certain amount.

Health Canada has been aware of this growing problem of Oxycodone abuse for quite some time.  It has been of a particular concern in the Atlantic Provinces in Canada: Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.  Health Canada did a study of all the pharmacies and medical practices throughout the Atlantic Provinces getting an idea of the amount of transactions made for products with Oxycodone in it.  Per 100,000 inhabitants in the Atlantic Provinces, 3948 transactions were made.  Prince Edward Island had the highest number of transactions at, 5,931.  New Brunswick constitutes of 44% of all the transactions of OxyContin made in Atlantic Canada.  Then came Nova Scotia at 27%, Newfoundland at 21%, and Prince Edward Island at 9%.
