Massive protests following Iran’s presidential election rolled into Monday as opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi attended a rally in the capital city of Tehran despite a government ban on such acts.
Mousavi was soundly defeated by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over the weekend, a surprising result to many who thought the election would be much closer. According to Mousavi the election had been rigged from the onset, claims that Ahmadinejad has denied.
Following the results that handed Ahmadinejad a second term thousands of pro-Mousavi supporters took to the streets in protests, demanding a re-vote. Those protesters clashed with police and for the past two days the violence has continued to build, leading the interior ministry to declare “any disrupter of public security would be dealt with according to the law.”
An official appeal against the election results has been filed with the Guardian Council but the likelihood of the clerical group siding with the opposition is not strong.
