Drug Rehab Addresses connection between nicotine and a person’s drug of choice

In Drug Rehab, Nicotine Cessation could be the key

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment center has made the connection between nicotine use and its direct correlation substance abuse and recovery since opening in 1998.

Each year in the United States 14,000 people are killed by illicit drugs. 19,000 are murdered, 41,000 die in motor vehicle accidents. 81,000 die from alcohol-related illness. Tobacco-related illnesses kill about 430,000. Both founders of Alcoholics anonymous died of nicotine – related illnesses. The percentage of Americans who are currently nicotine dependent is 32%. The percentage of people dependent on nicotine among drug and alcohol users is between 85-90%.

Several studies have shown that quitting both alcohol/drugs and nicotine while in treatment may be difficult at first, but it also increases your odds of staying clean and sober. The percentage of people who stay clean and sober is increased by 3 or 4 times simply by quitting nicotine along with their substance of choice. It is known scientific fact that nicotine reacts with the same neurotransmitters in the brain that both drugs and alcohol do. Another way of saying this is every time your body receives nicotine; your body craves your substance of choice. Imagine taking away that very serious temptation.

Mountainside’s wish has always been to educate people about these connections along with the inherent dangers of using tobacco products with the hope that each person will make the choice to quit using nicotine while they are staying with us. Mountainside provides several nicotine cessation meetings throughout the day and encourages guests to attend as well as providing a safe environment to help them learn to cope with life’s stresses without turning to alcohol, drugs or nicotine.  Many of Mountainsides alumni return years later still sober and nicotine free, returning to thank us for the wonderful gift of a truly substance free life.
