U.S.
President Barack Obama addressed members of the American Medical Association
during their annual meeting, outlining plans for his healthcare reform plans
that would provide insurance to the nearly 50 million people who have no
coverage.
As
part of that outline Obama assured those in attendance that under his new plan
people would be allowed to choose between private plans or an option provided
by the government. According to Obama “that will give people a broader range of
choices and inject competition into the health care market so that force waste
out of the system and keep the insurance companies honest.”
While
Obama urged AMA members to support his proposal, claiming the current healthcare
situation is a “ticking time bomb,” many have opposed a government-run
insurance plan, stating such a move would ruin private insurance companies and
ultimately affect the pay that doctors receive.
According
to Obama the ten-year reform program would cost close to $1 trillion and that
would be funded from budget cuts and cost-saving methods in existing programs.
