Whole cantaloupes grown at Jensen Farms in Granada, Colorado have been recalled after health authorities linked them to a deadly outbreak of food poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 13 people have died and 72 people in 18 states have fallen ill. The deaths occurred in Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
The CDC said the Rocky Ford cantaloupes are tainted with Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes the infection listeriosis. Older adults, pregnant women and newborns are more likely to be infected. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, vomiting and diarrhea.
Jensen Farms has issued a recall for all Rocky Ford whole cantaloupes shipped between July 29 and September 10. The fruit was distributed to Wyoming, Nebraska, Illinois, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.
All affected cantaloupes bear one of two stickers that read: Product of USA Frontera Produce-Colorado Fresh-Rocky Ford-Cantaloupe or Jensen Farms-Sweet Rocky Fords.
