Six hurt in New Hampshire horse carriage accident

Six people were injured Sunday in an accident at Apple Crest Farm involving two horse-drawn carriages. Police were called to the Exeter Road Orchard around 2pm to assist with the accident.

One woman, Joan Perkins, 51, was critically injured in the accident. Another passenger Gregory Dow, 50, was seriously injured. Both were taken to Exeter Hospital for treatment, but Perkins was later transferred to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.  Four other people sustained minor injuries and were treated at Exeter Hospital. The extent of Perkin’s injuries is not known, but she was still in critical condition on Monday.

After an initial investigation, police determined that the carriages being drawn by two horses each were travelling in opposite directions when a carriage part malfunctioned and spooked the horses. The carriage operators lost control of the animals, which resulted in the accident.
