Iranian Protests Turn Deadly as Security Forces Open Fire on Crowds

At least one protester has been killed and dozens more left injured after security forces in Iran opened fire on a massive crowd rallying against the outcome of last week’s presidential election.

Results from the election hand President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second-term in office but supporters of the other candidates claimed the election had been rigged, a charge Ahmadinejad has denied. His closest rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi, has already filed an appeal with the Guardian Council after he was soundly beaten according to the official results.

Many had expected the election to be close yet Ahmadinejad secured 63 percent of the vote to win in a landslide. Because of the huge margin supporters of Mousavi cried foul and launched protests despite an order from the government to refrain from assembling. After two days of violent clashes with security forces the protests turned deadly on Monday after shots were fired into the crowd.

The shootings came after a warning from the interior ministry which had earlier released a statement saying “any disrupter of public security would be dealt with according to the law.”
