Bryce Harper, HS Baseball Phenom, Skips Two Years of High School for MLB Draft

Bryce Harper, one of the nation’s top high school baseball prospects, announced this week that he is skipping his remaining two years of high school in hopes of entering the MLB Draft faster.

Harper, 16, made the announcement Saturday in Oklahoma City.

Harper, who was considered “The Chosen One” in a recent Sports Illustrated article, has registered at a community college where he plans to attend classes in the fall and play next season, his father Ron Harper said.

Harper graced the cover of the June 8 issue of Sports Illustrated, which compared him to NBA MVP LeBron James, who received a lot of hype early in his high school career before skipping college to enter the NBA draft.

Harper recently signed enrollment forms and a letter of intent to play for the College of Southern Nevada. He plans to take a high school equivalency test, earn his GED and enter the draft in 2010 or 2011, Ron Harper said.

Harper, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound catcher, hit .626 with 14 homers, 55 RBIs and 36 steals last season for Las Vegas H.S. in his sophomore season. He was also the first high school sophomore to be named a first team All-American by Baseball America.

In 2008, Harper hit .570 with 11 home runs and had 67 RBIs in 113 AB for Las Vegas H.S. in his freshman year. During this season, he hit a 570-foot homer. As a pitcher, he is clocked with a 96 mph fastball.

Players become eligible for the draft at age 16 if they have completed high school.
