Ricky Rubio Leads List of Players Who Will Stay in 2009 NBA Draft

By Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio headlines a list of players who decided to stay in the 2009 NBA Draft. The deadline was Monday, June 15 by 5 p.m.

Rubio, 18, will be staying in the draft, according to his agent Dan Fegan, after speculation that he might stay in Spain.

Rubio still stands as one of the biggest question marks in the draft. He is unsure where he will get drafted and many Americans are unsure if Rubio is as good as advertised due to lack of exposure to the U.S. audience. Fellow draft prospect Brandon Jennings, who skipped college to play in Europe this season, said the Spaniard is “overhyped.”

Several top college underclassmen also made their final decisions to stay in the draft on Monday, including Wake Forest sophomore guard Jeff Teague, UCLA freshman guard Jrue Holiday, Kentucky junior Jodie Meeks, St. Mary’s sophomore Patrick Mills and USC junior forward Taj Gibson.

Other players announced their decision to return to college, such as Georgia Tech sophomore forward Gani Lawal, Texas junior forward Damion James, South Carolina junior guard Dewan Downey and Maryland junior guard Greivis Vasquez.

Oklahoma sophomore Blake Griffin, the consensus No. 1 pick in every mock draft, never publicly wavered on his decision to stay in the NBA Draft.

Rubio is considered to be the No. 2 pick in many mock drafts.
