After 33 years of being a regular fixture on 60 Minutes with his original essays, Andy Rooney will retire from the CBS program this Sunday. Rooney, 92, will announce his retirement in his 1097th essay on Sunday’s broadcast following an interview about his career with Morley Safer.
Although Sunday will be Rooney’s final regular appearance, 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager said Rooney will “always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minutes when the urge hits him.”
"There's nobody like Andy and there never will be. He'll hate hearing this, but he's an American original. His contributions to 60 Minutes are immeasurable; he’s also a great friend,” Fager said.
Rooney has not commented.
