The two U.S. journalists arrested by North Korea and sentenced to 12 years of hard labor have reportedly admitted they entered the country illegally in an attempt to gather footage for a “smear campaign” detailing the country’s human rights violations.
Both Laura Ling and Euna Lee were arrested in March after North Korean authorities accused them of illegal entry. In their highly publicized trial in June the pair were found guilty of “hostile acts” despite claims by the U.S. that the charges were “baseless.”
On Tuesday state news agency KCNA released a report that indicated, “The accused admitted that what they did were criminal acts... prompted by the political motive to isolate and stifle the socialist system of the DPRK.”
The news agency went on to say Ling and Lee crossed the border “for the purpose of making animation files to be used for an anti-DPRK smear campaign over its human rights issue.”
Many question the legitimacy of the “confessions” and believe they have been orchestrated by North Korea in response to the recent UN sanctions placed on the country. Now the belief is that North Korea will use the two Americans as bargaining chips in discussions for concessions.
