Opposition Stages More Rallies in Tehran, Limited Recount of Vote Planned

For the fifth straight day following the announcement that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a second term in office supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi have rallied in Tehran, voicing their disproval with the outcome of the recent presidential election.

There were fears that Mousavi supporters would clash with Ahmadinejad supporters who had already gathered in the center of the city to hold their own rally but the opposition leader encouraged his supporters not to confront the president’s camp.

According to some reports the number of protesters is nearing one million people and with each day that passes that number appears to increase. The opposition has demanded a full recount of the vote but the Guardian Council and the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have expressed support for a limited recount.

Many believed the presidential election would be close but results showed Ahmadinejad win by a landslide, capturing 63 percent of the vote. That figure was immediately questioned and Mousavi called the results fraudulent, claiming Ahmadinejad had rigged the election. The president has denied those charges and called the vote legitimate.

On Monday the anger of the opposition boiled over and protesters clashed with security forces, leaving at least eight people dead and leading Mousavi to call for calm. Despite those calls protesters have continued to march in the streets in defiance of a government ban. Recognizing they had little chance at suppressing the protesters the government has now imposed tougher restrictions on foreign journalists who are now no longer allowed to report on “unauthorized” demonstrations.
