U.S. President Barack Obama met with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at the White House on Monday and following discussions it was announced Italy would take three detainees currently being held at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.
In one of his first orders following inauguration Obama called for the closing of Guantanamo but he has run into several problems from both Democrats and Republicans. Relocating the detainees has been one of the biggest problems Obama has encountered but the European Union has since agreed to transfer some inmates to Europe.
Berlusconi identified three specific detainees that Italy would accept. Details of those three have not been released nor a timeline as to when they will be transferred.
Nearly a quarter of the 220 detainees still held at Guantanamo are cleared for release but officials fear sending them back to their home country would put them at risk; as was the case with four Chinese Muslim Uighurs who were recently relocated to Bermuda. China demanded the men be returned home but U.S. officials refused after determining the men would be persecuted by the government which has alleged the men were part of a separatist movement.
