The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has advised
consumers to stop using Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel because the over-the-counter
product could cause permanent damage to the sense of smell.
Although no official recall has been issued, the FDA
warned against three of Zicam’s products – nasal gel, nasal swabs and kids size
swabs. About 130 consumers have reported loss of smell, also called anosmia,
after using Zicam. In many cases, the loss of smell occurred after the first
dose.
Zicam did not have to be approved by the government as it
was considered an herbal supplement rather than a drug. The FDA has sent Zicam
manufacturer Matrixx a warning letter saying the product can no longer be
marketed without government approval.
In a post on their website, Matrixx insists Zicam is safe
and the “allegations to the contrary are scientifically unfounded and
misleading.”
