Recovered heavy drinkers may still face balance problems

Heavy drinking has lasting effectsd

A study conducted in Honolulu and published in the journal of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, showed that balance problems can continue to plague those who drank heavily in previous years.

Three categories of individuals were studied: those who had been sober for six to fifteen weeks, those who had a history of long-term sobriety and those who had never been alcoholics. Of the three groups given a series of balance tests, those with the least amount of sobriety time performed the worst. However, those who had been sober for the longest performed markedly worse than those who were never alcoholics.

“This study could be viewed in many different way,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “If the takeaway from the study is that too much damage has been done and it’s too late for an individual to avoid damage if he/she gets sober, that’s the wrong message. The positive points of this study are two-fold: balance does get better when chronic drinking stops; secondly, alcoholism must be viewed as a disease which can be treated.”
