Weeks after numerous schools in and around Acapulco, Mexico were temporarily shut down due to lack of protection from attacks by drug cartels, five human heads were discovered Tuesday outside an elementary school in the port city. Authorities say the heads were found in a sack inside a wooden crate along with handwritten notes threatening the governor of Guerrero state. No other details were released.
Tuesday’s discovery comes as teachers across Acapulco protest extortion attempts by drug cartels. Cartels have apparently threatened to attack schools if teachers don’t hand over a portion of their salaries by October 1. Many school administrators and teachers went on strike, causing more than 100 schools to close at the beginning of the school year.
In an effort to get schools up and running, Guerrero Governor Angel Aguirre promised increased security measures. Additional police patrols, security cameras and panic buttons were among the promised safety precautions.
