An explosion on board a docked ferry in central Indonesia sparked a deadly stampeded on Wednesday, an official with the National Disaster Management Agency confirmed. The cause of the explosion remains unclear.
According to reports, the KM Kirana IX ferry was docked at the Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java when an oil leak caused an explosion inside the boat. More than 500 panicked passengers rushed to get off the ferry, resulting in at least 8 people being trampled to death. Authorities say 58 other people were injured in the stampede.
