Latvia’s Health Minister Ivars Eglitis Resigns Following Budget Cuts

Latvia’s Health Minister Ivars Eglitis has resigned from Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovski’s coalition government after declaring recent budget cuts would leave the majority of the country’s poor without healthcare.

Eglitis opposed the budget cuts passed by parliament on Tuesday, saying “As a doctor and a healthcare specialist in charge of the public health sector, I cannot accept this.”

Those budgets cuts were made in order to meet the qualifications outlined in an international loans package agreed to last December. That package included $10.5 billion in loans and to receive their latest installment of $1 billion they needed to cut its budget deficit.

Dombrovski accepted the resignation but said Eglitis “chose the easy way out.”
