Rafael Nadal and Dinara Safina Earn Top Seeds at Wimbledon, Roger Federer and Serena Williams Follow

The All England Club announced seedings for Wimbledon on Wednesday and Rafael Nadal has earned the top spot among the men while Dinara Safina will be the one-seed among women when the Grand Slam event kicks off on Monday.

Nadal is the defending champion after a epic battle with Roger Federer in last year’s Wimbledon final and with the manner in which the seeding has been set the two could meet again as the Swiss star earned the number two-seed on the grass courts. Federer, a five time-winner at Wimbledon, now has a shot at breaking his tie with Pete Sampras for most career Grand Slam wins as they both sit on 14 titles.

Feder is followed by Andy Murray at number three, Novak Djokavic at number four, Juan Martin Del Porto at number five, Andy Roddick at number six, Fernando Verdasco at number seven and Giles Simon at number eight.

On the women’s side Safina will attempt to chase down her first career Grand Slam victory. The Russian reached the finals at the French Open but once again came up short. Safina’s best result at Wimbledon has been a third round appearance on three occasions.

Serena Williams will be looking to capture her third Wimbledon title and her first since 2003. Serena has ten career Grand Sam singles titles and may need to go through her sister Venus Williams for an eleventh. Venus is the defending women’s champ and has won Wimbledon five times and has nine career Grand Slam singles titles.
