Russia and China Urge North Korea to Return to Negotiations

In an attempt to diffuse the explosive rhetoric coming from North Korea regarding recent sanctions imposed Russia and China have urged the reclusive county to return to negotiations concerning their nuclear program.

Russia and China have been North Korea’s closest allies over the years but the two countries signed the recent United Nations resolution that approved tougher sanctions against the country. Those sanctions came after North Korea carried out a nuclear test which followed several missile launches.

Shortly after the resolution was passed North Korea warned that they would retaliate a “thousand-fold” if Pyongyang was provoked; leaving many to believe the country would attempt to use nuclear weapons.

North Korea walked away from negotiations concerning their nuclear program earlier this year, claiming aid and incentives promised as part of the talks were not being delivered.

In a joint statement issued by Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev the two leaders urged North Korea to return to talks and said, “Russia and China are ready to foster the lowering of tension in Northeast Asia and call for the continuation of efforts by all sides to resolve disagreements through peaceful means, through dialogue and consultations.”
