Somalia’s
Security Minister Omar Hashi Aden was among at last ten people killed in a
suicide bombing attack at a hotel north of the capital Mogadishu.
Aden,
along with several Somali diplomats, had been at the Medina Hotel in Beledweyne
when a man detonated a car packed with explosives, instantly killing those in the
immediate area. Beledweyne has seen a rise in violence from Islamist insurgents
and Aden had been making in effort to stabilize the area.
Somali
President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed blamed al-Shabab for the attack, an
allegation that was later confirmed by the radical group which has been trying
to topple the UN-backed Somali government for more than three years.
