In the wake of Israel’s ground push to the Latani River which resulted in the deaths of 11 Israeli soldiers and 40 Hezbollah militants, a cease-fire has been set for this Monday. After a month of trying to bring the conflict to an end, a U.N. resolution has gained acceptance by the two sides.
After speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, Kofi Annan said “I am happy to announce that the two leaders have agreed that the cessation of hostilities and the end of the fighting will enter into force on 14 August, at 0500 hours GMT.”
Just before Lebanon voted unanimously to accept the resolution the leader of Hezbollah, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said he would abide by the country’s decision but vowed to continue fighting as long as Israeli troops were in Lebanon saying, “We must not make a mistake, not in the resistance, the government or the people, and believe that the war has ended. The war has not ended.”
The U.N. resolution calls for up to 15,000 peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops control southern Lebanon while Israeli forces withdraw. There was also a call for the “unconditional release” of the two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah on July 12.
