Iran’s Supreme Leader Demands End to Political Protests, Issues Warning to Opposition Political Leaders

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has demanded an end to political protests concerning the results of the recent presidential election and warned that any violence that stems from the rallies will be blamed on the opposition political leaders.

Massive protests followed the results of the presidential election that handed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term in office. Those protesters called for a new election, claiming the vote had been rigged by supporters of Ahmadinejad yet the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has backed the results and placed his support behind the president.

Now the Supreme Leader has ordered the unauthorized protests in Tehran to stop, warning a harsh crackdown on the gatherings would be implemented if the people didn’t adhere to the order. Despite these warnings protesters have already vowed to stage more rallies on Saturday, setting up a potentially violent clash with security forces.

Ayatollah Khamenei, appearing at a rally at Tehran University in support of Ahmadinejad, called the allegations of voter fraud impossible in Iran and placed the blame for those claims on the West, saying “keep your nose out of our business, these are domestic affairs you are meddling in and you are responsible for the allegations of vote rigging to begin with.”
