The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization has placed the number of those suffering from hunger at one billion, roughly one-sixth of the world’s population.
That figure represents an increase of 100 million suffering from hunger, that number due in large part to the global financial crisis as well as the rise in food prices. According to the FAO more than 640 million of those hungry are from the Asia-Pacific region while another 260 million are from sub-Saharan Africa.
FAO director general Jacques Diouf warned that the increase in hunger “poses a serious risk for world peace and security,” and stated, “We urgently need to forge a broad consensus on the total and rapid eradication of hunger in the world and to take the necessary actions.”
Diouf pointed out that while there were more hungry people than ever before there were also several developed countries that have grown richer despite the economic crisis. Because of that contradiction Diouf called on a greater effort from those countries to invest in those suffering most. He pushed for investment in agriculture, especially by smallholder farmers.
