One day after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned protesters of future demonstrations concerning the recent presidential election a large contingent of Iranian security forces used water cannons, batons and tear gas to disperse crowds that defied the order.
As many protesters attempted to make their way to Enghelab Square for another day of rallies they were met by anti-riot police, military forces and Basij militia, the religious paramilitaries closely tied to the Islamic revolution. Those forces carried out the orders of the Supreme Leader, using any means necessary to block protesters from assembling, effectively ending any planned demonstration.
Massive protests have been held in Tehran and other cities inside Iran since results of the presidential election handed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term in office. Supporters of opposition leader Mir Houssein Mousavi claimed the election had been rigged and the landslide victory for Ahmadinejad was a reflection of voter fraud.
Despite those claims Ahmadinejad’s victory was endorsed by the Ayatollah who quickly called for an end to the rallies, calling them illegal and in direct defiance of Iranian law. Those rallies continued as massive crowds continued to inundate the streets of Tehran demanding a new election yet their calls have been ignored. Instead police have arrested scores of the protesters and reports have suggested at least 10 people have been killed in clashes.
On Friday Ayatollah Khamenei addressed the issue of the protests by stating, “This is challenging democracy and election itself. I want every side to put an end to this method. If they don't then the responsibility of its consequences, the riots should be shouldered by those who do not put an end to it.”
