Rafael Nadal will not by on the grass courts of the All England Club to defend his Wimbledon title after withdrawing from the Grand Slam event due to tendinitis in his knees.
Nadal opted to withdraw after declaring he was not capable of playing to the level needed to win the tournament. The Spaniard won his first Wimbledon title last year after beating Roger Federer in an epic battle but he now becomes just the second champion in the last 35 years not to return to defend his title.
On Friday Nadal confirmed he would not be playing as he stated, “When I start a tournament like Wimbledon, it is to try to win, and my feeling right now is I'm not ready to play to win.”
Nadal had been seeded number one for the tournament but with him out Federer will now become the favorite to capture his sixth Wimbledon title. If Federer does win he would take over the world number one ranking, a spot he lost to Nadal last year.
Federer is coming off his first career French open title, a victory that gave him a career Grand Slam and 14 singles titles. Those 14 Grand Slam singles titles evens him with Pete Sampras for most all-time.
